Chris Norman + David Greenberg
Two of the most imaginative and dynamic performers in traditional and early music join forces to present a program that runs the gamut from renaissance, baroque, traditional and original music incorporating flutes, violins, ...vielles, pipes, keyboards, and voice.
CHRIS NORMAN
Hailed as one of the finest flute players of our time, Chris Norman begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting proves over and over again that the simple wooden flute is the original- and still unsurpassed- woodwind of expression, passion, joy and subtlety. His influential work as a performer, composer, recording artist and teacher has brought the simple wooden flute to the forefront as an alternative voice to the modern orchestral instrument.
His interest in the traditional music of Maritime Canada; Scottish, Irish and French Canadian styles, drew him from his early path studying classical flute. Chris embarked upon a quest to learn the music from the tradition-bearers, travelling across North America and Europe . His subsequent work as redefined the boundaries of both traditional and classical styles, forging a synthesis that has been embraced by audiences, scholars and critics of both schools.
DAVID GREENBERG has been praised as both "one of the most impassioned folk-fiddlers you'll ever hear" (James Manishen, Winnipeg Free Press) and "the best baroque violin soloist in Canada , if not North America " (Stephen Pedersen, Halifax Mail-Star). This dual musical identity is not a newly acquired habit. During his schooling in classical violin playing (beginning at age 4), David also picked up traditional fiddling by ear from recordings.
Originally from Maryland , David studied baroque violin at Indiana University 's Early Music Institute, and moved to Canada in 1988 to join the Toronto-based baroque orchestra Tafelmusik. Since then, David has performed with this internationally acclaimed baroque ensemble in orchestral, chamber, and solo roles in North America, Europe, and the Far East , and on more than forty recordings. David also is sought out as a performer on the vielle (medieval fiddle). He won first prize at the Erwin Bodky International Early Music Competition in 1988 with the Medieval Quintet, and he recorded vielle soundtracks for Atom Egoyan's film "The Sweet Hereafter."

Sundown & The Sparse Brothers
The Sparse Brothers
Coming to the Harbour Light direct from Riccarton, the Sparse Brothers will be performing the first (and final) concert of their 2010 world tour. Widely acclaimed by their families, this three-to-four-piece band, who've been together five years, play a range of rock covers (e.g. the Clash, Fleetwood Mac, the Doors, Blur) and blues covers (Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson) as well as several originals. Their sound combines the different vocal styles of the members (from smooth and silky to raw and edgy) with a tight, driving rhythm section and occasional manic bursts of electric slide guitar and funky bass. The band's sound, along with their song selection, will appeal widely, to both the discerning listener and the undiscerning listener.
The line-up is Mark Toomer on vocals and guitar, Thomas Harre on bass and vocals and David Harre on drums. Joining them is Chris Guerin on vocals and keyboard. Listen to some of the Sparse Brothers' songs at www.myspace.com/thesparsebrothers .
Sundown
Sundown play the songs that made you want to listen to music in the first place. From the real hits of the 60s and 70s, to a few you may not be so familiar with, the emphasis is on songs with great tunes, good lyrics, and a beat that you can't ignore.
The nucleus of the band originated as part of MusicWorks Weekend Warriors programme … 3 years on, it's been a long weekend. Having discovered a shared passion for great music – it just makes sense to spread it around.
Tickets $5, table/ticket reservations and door sales. Open 7:15pm, Starts 7:45pm.

A Reason to Scream Album Release
A Reason to Scream is the debut audio offering from Kaiapoi singer songwriter Chris Bull and the latest form sunset records
This album has been 10 years in the making for Chris who first started out singing in garage bands at high school and co foundered ex Nelson Alt/rock band The Snake Behaviour. Chris brings a new refreshing sound to his songwriting in his first solo album. Far from the distorted 3 chord riffs and thrashing drums sound created by his former bands, Chris brings an eloquent acoustic sound, part pop, part rock, part something entirely different.
From start to finish every song on this album will provoke your thoughts and have you dancing, crying or simply chilling out. Every song is a snapshot of a moment in time in Chris' life to date so far. These songs are more than just tunes on a record and words on paper, they are a look into a sometimes troubled, sometimes happy yet always fulfilling life.
A reason to scream is due for release on Friday 15 th October 2010.
So make sure you come along to The Harbour Light in Lyttelton on October 15 th to see Chris play songs from A Reason to Scream and some amazing support acts.
Tickets $5, Open 7:30pm, Starts 8pm.
